What is your story and how do you share your story to make an impact?
My guest on this show is a good friend of mine, Rachel Beck, who has shared her incredible story in her book, “Finding Your Way When Life Changes Your Plans” about many of her experiences facing racism, health issues, and more. Rachel’s story, in and of itself, would seem like much of what many have had to deal with over the years here in America and abroad. But, Rachel brings in stories and shares her personal truths as she rips open many of the wounds of the past in her book.
Knowing how to share one’s story and how to help others is extremely important – not only in business or life – but for humanity’s sake. We need to keep reminding others of how issues may arise and keep us reminded of where we’re going to avoid repeating mistakes of the past.
Listen in as Rachel and I talk about each other’s stories and how you can possibly relate, especially as we are dropping this episode on International Women’s Day 2022!

About Rachel: Rachel Beck is a rising voice in the movement of women’s storytelling. It is rooted in a cross-cultural, adoptive-family love story unlike any other. Lifted up by wings strengthened through struggle, Rachel’s story flies in the face of society’s expectations for women to look a “certain way” and slip comfortably into the American Dream. Not that our cultural dreams aren’t beautiful, yet what happens when life changes our plans?
Rachel’s heartbreakingly humorous anecdotes of initially coping, then soul-searching, and ultimately releasing anger at her body and the world shines with insight into the deepest core questions of human relationships and identity. Who am I, and why am I here in this wild world, really? With vulnerability and grace, Rachel simultaneously captures and frees the emotions surrounding all sides of adoption, her intense encounters with racism, her path to a loss of motherhood, and her courageous renaissance — illustrating how “the end” of one road is only the beginning of another…and the unforeseen is also beautiful and perhaps more fulfilling than we could have ever imagined.

makes somebody change enough that the information that is now in your book is going to be shared with so many more people.
00:00:38.000 –> 00:00:48.000

storytelling it’s rooted in a cross-cultural adoptive family love, story unlike any other, lifted up by wings strengthened through struggle.
00:01:12.000 –> 00:01:22.000
Rachel’s story flies in the face of society’s expectations for women to look certain white comfortably into the American dream.
00:01:22.000 –> 00:01:28.000
Not that our cultural dreams Aren’t beautiful yet what happens when life changes our plans.
00:01:28.000 –> 00:01:39.000
Rachel’s heartbreakingly humorous anecdotes of initially coping than sole searching, and ultimately releasing anger at her body in the world, shines with insight into the deepest
00:01:39.000 –> 00:01:44.000
core questions of human relationships and identity. Who am I?
00:01:44.000 –> 00:01:48.000
And why am here in this wild world with vulnerability and grace?
00:01:48.000 –> 00:01:56.000
Rachel simultaneously captures and freezing emotions surrounding all side of adoption from intense encounters with racism.
00:01:56.000 –> 00:02:09.000
Her path to a loss of motherhood, and her courageous Renaissance, illustrating how the end of one road is only the beginning of another, and the unforeseen is also beautiful, and perhaps more fulfilling than we could
00:02:09.000 –> 00:02:15.000
have ever imagined, Rachel, thank you so much for being here, and that’s just well.
00:02:15.000 –> 00:02:30.000
Your story from your bio is incredible. Let me ask you, as we bring you in our conversation today, so much going on that you have been dealing with.
00:02:30.000 –> 00:02:47.000
How did you manage to to get through so much of what was thrown your way in terms of loss of motherhood, the racism, the issues that you are facing have?
00:02:47.000 –> 00:02:57.000
How did you manage to just deal with that? Thank you, Jennifer. Thank you so much for having me on your show today really is my honor and privilege.
00:02:57.000 –> 00:03:01.000
I think the world is so. Thank you for having me absolutely.
00:03:01.000 –> 00:03:09.000
Thank you, It has been lot of hitting the ground falling down.
00:03:09.000 –> 00:03:21.000
Then having to pull deep inside my soul to get back up again, and I can see those moments the where I made that choice.
00:03:21.000 –> 00:03:37.000
I have fallen jen so many times I i’ve lost count of it, that it was choice. it was choice, and I have to say I’m very blessed because I have a strong support system I have family, and friends who got through me
00:03:37.000 –> 00:03:43.000
so through the hardest times in my life. But it was a choice.
00:03:43.000 –> 00:03:54.000
And was it easy sometimes, Jen no it wasn’t whether days that I just wanted with the blanket over my head and stay there absolutely absolutely.
00:03:54.000 –> 00:04:14.000
So as we look at having those days and i’m sure a lot of us have been there and have tried different ways of trying to figure out, what do we do when we’re in that situation?
00:04:14.000 –> 00:04:33.000
What were some of the things that you found worked for you to help you get out from under the covers, and there are a couple things. I don’t know if you know this, but I have ptsd I was diagnosed with
00:04:33.000 –> 00:04:40.000
it many years back, due to deeply traumatic situation, and I had to, you know.
00:04:40.000 –> 00:04:54.000
I’m very pro or this is just me share my story but i’m extremely pro therapy right and because I’ve had so much trauma in my life. i’ve had very strong therapists to get me through
00:04:54.000 –> 00:05:01.000
it, and I was taught certain tricks to survive because a lot of it has been about.
00:05:01.000 –> 00:05:13.000
So I will. So some of the things that I did as a choice is, people needed me.
00:05:13.000 –> 00:05:26.000
People needed me for the very serious things that they were facing in their life, or what they were going through.
00:05:26.000 –> 00:05:33.000
My dogs needed me. Near that time I had 2 dogs. I had a lab and another dog who was a rescue.
00:05:33.000 –> 00:05:41.000
They got me through it. They were a huge source of strength for me, and so i’d get up.
00:05:41.000 –> 00:05:44.000
You know. I’m a huge walker I do that every day.
00:05:44.000 –> 00:05:51.000
So those are choice today. They needed me. So I got up and spent the time with them and went through all of it.
00:05:51.000 –> 00:06:01.000
My art got me through it a lot of it i’m a retired photographer, but I did that for 10 years, and now I do it as a hobby.
00:06:01.000 –> 00:06:10.000
If I’m not being creative, my soul will die I know that about myself, like my soul will die, and I will not be who I am today.
00:06:10.000 –> 00:06:21.000
So my art helped me get got me through it, my disappearing int nature, and just being gone for a couple hours deep in the woods or down by the ocean.
00:06:21.000 –> 00:06:32.000
So i’ve learned to through tools i’ve learned to listen to what my soul needs, and I’ve I’ve come to a point where will listen to my soul guiding me.
00:06:32.000 –> 00:06:37.000
Does it guide me the right times? Absolutely not jen made a lot of mistakes in my life.
00:06:37.000 –> 00:06:43.000
I’m human. We are they made wrong choices Yes, of course I have.
00:06:43.000 –> 00:06:57.000
So i’ve listened to my soul i’ve had 3 near death experiences, and it was actually someone had studied me for part of her paper, which was getting a meshes i’ve had 3 near death experiences and I
00:06:57.000 –> 00:07:01.000
remember when the third one happened, because she had interviewed me in the second one had happened.
00:07:01.000 –> 00:07:06.000
And you know she was doing this paper, you know, in the coffee shop is you know what I mean in sections.
00:07:06.000 –> 00:07:17.000
And then I had the third new death experience and I said to her don’t know why this keeps happening to me, and she said I could tell you right now, because your story is not done.
00:07:17.000 –> 00:07:29.000
Wow, your story is not done, and that is such a powerful statement.
00:07:29.000 –> 00:07:39.000
Your story is not done, I mean, if you think about it, a lot of us are sitting here trying to figure out the existential questions in the world.
00:07:39.000 –> 00:07:43.000
What is the meaning of life? That is one of the greatest questions.
00:07:43.000 –> 00:07:55.000
And and just because Monty python patience my head and the hitchhiker’s guys of the galaxy, I have to say 42 for those of you that know that I have to throw that out
00:07:55.000 –> 00:07:59.000
just because we need a little bit of that lightness, interjected.
00:07:59.000 –> 00:08:10.000
But not that It’s that point I mean a lot of us have certainly been dealing with the issues and not to belittle what you were just saying.
00:08:10.000 –> 00:08:18.000
I mean, that was absolutely incredible, going through everything and having that statement because your story is not yet done.
00:08:18.000 –> 00:08:34.000
So let me ask you, then, as you went to start writing your book then, and looking at it as a way to there, some of that story that is not yet done yet.
00:08:34.000 –> 00:08:50.000
How did you go about looking at the book and getting the book to a position of acting in some therapeutic fashion for you as well in writing that?
00:08:50.000 –> 00:08:53.000
So let me tell you, this is a beautiful story you’re gonna love This: Okay.
00:08:53.000 –> 00:08:58.000
The idea of of the book actually came from one of my girlfriends.
00:08:58.000 –> 00:09:02.000
She actually know how we you and I talk about seeing what to see.
00:09:02.000 –> 00:09:08.000
Something inside of somebody bring it out. they don’t necessarily see in themselves.
00:09:08.000 –> 00:09:11.000
The most beautiful thing that you can give to another human being.
00:09:11.000 –> 00:09:15.000
So I had gone i’m in my mid fortys right i’m, climbing up to 15.
00:09:15.000 –> 00:09:25.000
I’m very proud of that and she’d call me and gone back to school in my fortys, finished my degree, and she had called me.
00:09:25.000 –> 00:09:38.000
I had met her in India, and then she traveled back and we definitely feel like it was, you know, met to me, and she said, You know, rage I’m sitting here and I said Yeah, she said, I feel very strongly in my heart you need
00:09:38.000 –> 00:09:46.000
to write a book. the celebrity talking about i’m not an author that’s not, you know the that’s not what I do.
00:09:46.000 –> 00:09:49.000
She was. Do me a favor. Sit down, and she knows my like.
00:09:49.000 –> 00:09:54.000
Knew my life story, she said. Do me favorite. Just sit down in your computer.
00:09:54.000 –> 00:10:05.000
Tell me what happens but the first day, and ended up writing 5 h, and it was like that every single day, and I wrote the book for like in August, in October I hired a publisher, who was also my
00:10:05.000 –> 00:10:10.000
editor, and I called her when I was done, and I said, How did you know?
00:10:10.000 –> 00:10:15.000
I said, how’d you know you had a I had a book inside me, she said.
00:10:15.000 –> 00:10:21.000
I knew it. I just wanted you to see it, and it was what a beautiful saying!
00:10:21.000 –> 00:10:29.000
1 one of your you know, girlfriends in your life says you Say, Jen, I see you’re gonna be a future artist, Jen, you’re gonna walk this world.
00:10:29.000 –> 00:10:35.000
Jen you’re gonna be successful. jen everything that you deserve is gonna come your way.
00:10:35.000 –> 00:10:40.000
Everything that you ever want or need or jen you know what you’re thinking about doing this.
00:10:40.000 –> 00:10:46.000
Then go for it. We all need those people in our lives to see something that we don’t see in ourselves.
00:10:46.000 –> 00:11:04.000
So that’s how the book came about that’s exactly and it was I had to relive a lot of Traumas writing the book, because you you know, for an author I write from a cellular level and it’s hard to
00:11:04.000 –> 00:11:08.000
explain that. so it was tapping into all of it again.
00:11:08.000 –> 00:11:12.000
Things that i’d closed down in my mind things that I had experienced.
00:11:12.000 –> 00:11:16.000
I never wanted to experience. I mean there were moments jen i’m not gonna lie to you.
00:11:16.000 –> 00:11:29.000
I was crying, Why, I was typing because i’m reliving reliving it. I’m we living you know the miscarriages I we live in every , everything my body’s gone through.
00:11:29.000 –> 00:11:37.000
And we’re living all those moments I mean it brought up the grief which you know grief comes in waves, and it’s like a tidal wave.
00:11:37.000 –> 00:11:49.000
You’re doing great when we move something happens and you’re starting all over again, and with the grief and Ptsd.
00:11:49.000 –> 00:12:09.000
I can certainly relate as a 9 over 11 survivor it’s something that every year is back in the forefront internal of for all of the families that want their loved ones for all the survivors we all have our
00:12:09.000 –> 00:12:17.000
own traumas that were that we dealt with, and are still dealing with, 20 plus years after the fact.
00:12:17.000 –> 00:12:23.000
But for so many people that Grief and the Ptsd.
00:12:23.000 –> 00:12:47.000
And all of the incidents that happened up until this point in our lives have created such a place in our, so that when we look at trying to figure out what we can do, we very often feel even more lost though for you to be in
00:12:47.000 –> 00:13:00.000
a position that you are able to write the book and get that on paper. Get the publisher to take and release it, and put it out there definitely.
00:13:00.000 –> 00:13:17.000
An incredible story, and i’m going to just share with our listeners. The name of the book is finding your way when life changes your plans. A memoir of adoption, loss of motherhood, and remembering home so can you just tell us
00:13:17.000 –> 00:13:26.000
a little bit more about the actual story in the book that we can really get a better idea who Rachel actually is.
00:13:26.000 –> 00:13:32.000
Yeah, I was on. Thank you for asking, Jen. I was born in India.
00:13:32.000 –> 00:13:38.000
My mom died 2 days after giving birth. I am looking for my biological father.
00:13:38.000 –> 00:13:47.000
That’s been adjourning I was put into the founder of into her home, who was building orphanage, which is still standing there today.
00:13:47.000 –> 00:13:56.000
She actually rescued me. I was borderline dying and she was a nurse, and she had founded this orphanage, and she took me in, and she saved my life.
00:13:56.000 –> 00:14:05.000
So i’ve actually had 3 mothers right my biological my Foster, Mom and I stayed in her home till I was adopted, as you know, by a Jewish family in America.
00:14:05.000 –> 00:14:12.000
That’s how I became an Indian jewish woman and then my mother, who raised me great.
00:14:12.000 –> 00:14:21.000
So i’m looking for and so i’ve been fighting from my lives since I’m.
00:14:21.000 –> 00:14:30.000
2 days old, and I I I just realized fighting for my lifeers.
00:14:30.000 –> 00:15:00.000
And so himself, saying that to survive say God you survive, because you have been in a position to help so many people, because those that’s two-day old stealth did not give up, because through all of those near death situations that
00:15:06.000 –> 00:15:12.000
you are dealing with. You did not give up or given.
00:15:12.000 –> 00:15:21.000
You have continued to be shining beacon so many people, simply because you have continued to fight.
00:15:21.000 –> 00:15:44.000
You have continued to be a voice. And for those of you that are listening, Rachel, on Linkedin has weekly videos that she does that reach so many people. and the uplifting stories that are shared in so many of those
00:15:44.000 –> 00:15:52.000
videos. You don’t even know how many hundreds or thousands if not more people.
00:15:52.000 –> 00:16:02.000
You touching simply because that story was shared, and you continue to move forward.
00:16:02.000 –> 00:16:29.000
And so it really an incredible celebration! the fact that you have been fighting since you are 2 days old, If you think about where all of us have come, and all of us are in our own lives, what do we need to do how do we
00:16:29.000 –> 00:16:36.000
do and everything, because we’re all having our own fights at different times.
00:16:36.000 –> 00:16:51.000
And it’s our human instinctual nature to keep on pushing and going and doing what we can to really make that difference in the world.
00:16:51.000 –> 00:17:13.000
There’s a idea and Judaism called tecoon alum fixing the world, and it is all because of what we do that that is, drives what we’re supposed to be doing in the world.
00:17:13.000 –> 00:17:31.000
And so from what you have been dealing with, and the that you were dealt right, the miscarriages and the health issues, and your biological mom dying, And you know all of the racism that you faced here in the Us.
00:17:31.000 –> 00:17:47.000
Even has been such an important story, and it you liver of what you share every time you speak.
00:17:47.000 –> 00:17:56.000
And it’s really important because for everyone that’s listening you’ve all had your own flavors, too.
00:17:56.000 –> 00:18:01.000
There’s a saying that I heard life is like a Schmorgus board.
00:18:01.000 –> 00:18:20.000
What are you going to take from it and it’s exactly that idea that when you are looking at your life and you’re taking a little bit of this and a little bit of that and you’re putting it all together you’re marrying, the different
00:18:20.000 –> 00:18:41.000
flavors that are in your life, which is going to be making a huge impact in terms of where we go, and that Rachel, I think, is where the a lot of your strains has been coming from Thank you for being a caring and
00:18:41.000 –> 00:18:45.000
empathetic human being and I love you for it jennifer.
00:18:45.000 –> 00:18:56.000
It’s just something i’m trying every day you understand what i’m trying to do. You understand that i’m trying to make this world a better place.
00:18:56.000 –> 00:19:10.000
You understand that i’m i’m trying to lived other souls up that are good, kind soul that they just need a little bit of help, and that’s what you and I are trying to do which we’re trying to like those
00:19:10.000 –> 00:19:15.000
Sosa, those kind, beautiful souls that just need like a little help.
00:19:15.000 –> 00:19:28.000
I find it really, really freshering it’s the kind people who are changing this world, taking it forward doing the best, the best, as whether they’re running charities.
00:19:28.000 –> 00:19:31.000
You know what I mean. Those kind people who are suffering.
00:19:31.000 –> 00:19:35.000
I. I hear from them all day long that just need that one moment.
00:19:35.000 –> 00:19:40.000
They just need that one break. They just need one human being to believe in them.
00:19:40.000 –> 00:19:54.000
But they’re out there and and they’re doing phenomenal things, and then you know i’ll hear from them say raising and read funding for this and they have their you know during the most freaking important work in this
00:19:54.000 –> 00:19:59.000
world, and it is beyond frustrating me that they can’t get that help.
00:19:59.000 –> 00:20:25.000
So that is why I have chose to do what i’m doing with this show is to get people and that’s absolutely a an incredible motives to really make a difference, and to reach more people like you are saying to find those
00:20:25.000 –> 00:20:35.000
souls to find what it is that really can make a difference in the world, and who knows what tomorrow is going to bring?
00:20:35.000 –> 00:20:43.000
You know, they say yesterday is the past tomorrow’s the future today is the present, and we have to honor it as the gift that we were given.
00:20:43.000 –> 00:20:56.000
And so the more that we continue to look at what it is that we’re doing today to make that difference that way tomorrow is a brighter future for everybody.
00:20:56.000 –> 00:21:03.000
Really an incredible story, and that really goes to the idea of even the name of this show.
00:21:03.000 –> 00:21:12.000
Mojo, the meaning of life and business it’s not just business alone, anything else, because we need life.
00:21:12.000 –> 00:21:31.000
We need business to help in life and so there’s all of these issues that are out there, and when we’re looking at what we’re doing all of these issues like, we said, Come back and remind us who we are set its
00:21:31.000 –> 00:21:56.000
shapes. There are future in a much better late. Let me ask you, in your experience with the book and your experience with the publicity that you had after the book, and where you are with where you want to ultimately get the messaging through
00:21:56.000 –> 00:22:00.000
you mentioned to find those souls and to touch the people.
00:22:00.000 –> 00:22:16.000
What drives you, though, to keep going even when sorry I can tell you I’m very happy to share with you. so you know I’ve shared with you privately that part of the persons in my book are going back to the war
00:22:16.000 –> 00:22:20.000
fines that that’s what I’m doing you and I both know about Saddam Hussein.
00:22:20.000 –> 00:22:29.000
I don’t know about ticona lum jen I have this major goal that i’m trying to hit the major major goal.
00:22:29.000 –> 00:22:35.000
I don’t forget where I come from and it is concerning like around.
00:22:35.000 –> 00:22:40.000
It is around the orphanage, and things that I have in my heart that I would like to do for them.
00:22:40.000 –> 00:22:50.000
But it’s. Why, you see me get up every single day then until I hit that goal. i’m not gonna stop my purpose has nothing to do with me.
00:22:50.000 –> 00:22:56.000
Not one freaking bit. People don’t know that about me they don’t take the time to learn my story.
00:22:56.000 –> 00:23:01.000
They think that i’m out there we will have such misconceptions.
00:23:01.000 –> 00:23:10.000
But about social media influencers they don’t understand us they don’t take the time to understand us so and that’s why I’ve been in the show for 3 years.
00:23:10.000 –> 00:23:12.000
It’s exactly why it’s introduced this is a real human being.
00:23:12.000 –> 00:23:18.000
I’m trying to humanize social media and said Number 250,000 is my friend Jennifer Glass.
00:23:18.000 –> 00:23:22.000
But please meet her today. she’s a real human being with a heart and soul.
00:23:22.000 –> 00:23:28.000
So what i’m trying to I want to I don’t care if people call me naive about it.
00:23:28.000 –> 00:23:32.000
I am gonna do everything my power to end racism, to end anti-semitism.
00:23:32.000 –> 00:23:39.000
I have huge ideas around it. I have discussions, I I I see it in my head.
00:23:39.000 –> 00:23:43.000
I know that it is possible, and i’ve been speaking on diversity awareness.
00:23:43.000 –> 00:23:57.000
For 15 years in many different, many different avenues so i’m, deeply passionate that I will use my voice to end racism and to run and anti-semitism.
00:23:57.000 –> 00:24:15.000
So let me ask you with the that you’re doing and the experience of the anti-semitism and racism.
00:24:15.000 –> 00:24:30.000
Would you be open to sharing some of those issues that absolutely It’s your lots of because i’ve had divorced experiences, racial incidence in my life.
00:24:30.000 –> 00:24:37.000
The last couple of years I get kicked out of places because they call it risk.
00:24:37.000 –> 00:24:42.000
It type. People think that this only happens in the 1,900 fiftys.
00:24:42.000 –> 00:24:50.000
And so, whatever you know what I mean like a long time ago, before civil rights laws passed, I get kicked out of places cause the columnist skin.
00:24:50.000 –> 00:24:54.000
I’m told that my credit card is not real that there’s no way I could afford one.
00:24:54.000 –> 00:25:09.000
I’m followed up to places and followed in store i’ve actually been followed to physical homes that I own right where people have followed me down the street, making sure that I actually live there, and they followed up to my front door I
00:25:09.000 –> 00:25:17.000
get followed and stores. I have been told I can’t shop places.
00:25:17.000 –> 00:25:23.000
I can never, ever afford it. The whole you know there’s a vibe right.
00:25:23.000 –> 00:25:38.000
There’s a vibe that i’m an empath so I pick up on people’s lives jen summers things that have happened, or even downloads scary people bing on my glass. door my car i’ve had that happen twice this
00:25:38.000 –> 00:25:48.000
year, asking me what my race is i’ve had people ask me talk down me and call me the i’m not even say the names here.
00:25:48.000 –> 00:26:01.000
I’m sure you can imagine what they are the worst names ever complete strangers, whether it’s a derogatory name for the column of skin, or for being a Jewish person and i’m proud to be an Indian Jewish
00:26:01.000 –> 00:26:05.000
woman. i’ve done a apologizing for that and I will know longer do it.
00:26:05.000 –> 00:26:12.000
I’m done stepping into a place of conforming to make other peoples comfortable.
00:26:12.000 –> 00:26:15.000
Now. I want people to be comfortable with me And, Jen.
00:26:15.000 –> 00:26:24.000
It is taking me years to come to this place I Don’t Want apologize to being an Indian Jewish woman anymore.
00:26:24.000 –> 00:26:32.000
I’ve had some extremely scary incidences where and you know how it’s going to end up.
00:26:32.000 –> 00:26:35.000
You know I don’t know if i’d be talking with you today.
00:26:35.000 –> 00:26:44.000
People. It amazes me. People send me messages. and They say racism that still exists in 2,022.
00:26:44.000 –> 00:26:48.000
Yes, it does, and that’s why you and I are having this conversation right?
00:26:48.000 –> 00:26:54.000
This is exactly why you, you and I are having this conversation, because it very much does exist.
00:26:54.000 –> 00:27:06.000
I told You get i’ll leave an email needed to I was picking up an obviously and go back to this restaurant to spend money there again.
00:27:06.000 –> 00:27:16.000
I’ll never see another dime for me I was like picking up an order, and someone said, You need your kind needs to stand in the front those last year.
00:27:16.000 –> 00:27:35.000
Gem that was like, and it’s a excuse me and they said, You’re kind, sustained in the fine, if you know you and I both know I have a voice the strong horses, So I almost walk outside that restaurant
00:27:35.000 –> 00:27:42.000
film a video to say who they were and what they were doing, and they didn’t because I thought of employees and the people of their jobs.
00:27:42.000 –> 00:27:47.000
And so that have you know we need. We need your kind to stand in the front.
00:27:47.000 –> 00:27:58.000
You know, Nancy, excuse me. like we really don’t need you in the back, you know, and this is exactly how the conversation went, Jen, because I will never forget.
00:27:58.000 –> 00:28:03.000
I came home from beyond fears we don’t really need you in the back.
00:28:03.000 –> 00:28:09.000
What’s customers. that was the last year Jim there was a year ago.
00:28:09.000 –> 00:28:16.000
So yeah, it’s very much it’s very much very and obviously, and spend money down here.
00:28:16.000 –> 00:28:19.000
We go back there. We don’t get my money you you know it’s just not gonna happen.
00:28:19.000 –> 00:28:26.000
So, and so all that stuff instead of I choose to let this right way.
00:28:26.000 –> 00:28:31.000
I rise above it. I set the example I don’t return heat with heat.
00:28:31.000 –> 00:28:38.000
What I do is I take love I put it over hate and that’s how I freakin when that’s exactly how i’m going to do.
00:28:38.000 –> 00:28:44.000
It. I would never lower my standards. I would never lower go to their level.
00:28:44.000 –> 00:28:52.000
I will not engage with them lots of times when things happen to regen very scary situation.
00:28:52.000 –> 00:29:09.000
Human people i’m walking mining my own business and people are screaming the end word to me that was last year, and i’m lining my own business taking a walk so yeah i’m i’m going to
00:29:09.000 –> 00:29:23.000
that’s a sad state of affairs. that that’s the world that we’re living in. and I mean you think about all of the progress that has been made, and you look at the last several years.
00:29:23.000 –> 00:29:35.000
The rise of anti-semitism across the globe, so scary a rise of anti-asian incidents just because of Covid and
00:29:35.000 –> 00:29:45.000
Issues related to that issues still in the wake of the Ahmed arborey case of the
00:29:45.000 –> 00:30:02.000
The 3 white men who killed the black guy and all the other stories that have been going on and on, that have been continuing to share our news, continuing to shape the way that we’re looking at things.
00:30:02.000 –> 00:30:11.000
And this is 2022 when we’re recording this interview which is incredible.
00:30:11.000 –> 00:30:24.000
Think that that’s still you know 60 years after almost 60 years after the signing in the Civil Rights Act, that this is still going on.
00:30:24.000 –> 00:30:32.000
And what’s happening. I mean it’s just we’re trying to figure out where we go.
00:30:32.000 –> 00:30:48.000
And a lot of it is going to be education. it’s going to be keeping our kids from learning the same hatred, because we know hatred is a learned emotion.
00:30:48.000 –> 00:30:52.000
It’s not innate if you have 3 babies sitting there.
00:30:52.000 –> 00:30:57.000
One is a white baby. one is a black baby, one is an Asian baby.
00:30:57.000 –> 00:31:03.000
The 3 of them are going to play together because that’s what babies do.
00:31:03.000 –> 00:31:13.000
They don’t see color. They don’t see where they don’t see anything that is going to mean anything different to them.
00:31:13.000 –> 00:31:33.000
So we really need to stop this hatred and one of the things that I’ve been saying all along is any time that we give foreign aid from the United States to an international government.
00:31:33.000 –> 00:31:45.000
We need to be putting in requirements against hatred removing that kind of information from any textbook that’s taught in school.
00:31:45.000 –> 00:31:57.000
If you look in many places that’s exactly what’s still in those same box internally, we need to do something as well.
00:31:57.000 –> 00:32:01.000
We need to be figuring out. What is it that we can do?
00:32:01.000 –> 00:32:14.000
That is going to make that difference The more that we see where we’re going to be the more that we know we’re going to be making that tomorrow a better tomorrow for all people.
00:32:14.000 –> 00:32:30.000
Yes, I know i’m going back to my Utopian ideas I don’t see that as a problem now, and i’m sure a lot of you that are listening don’t honestly see that as a problem either again we
00:32:30.000 –> 00:32:38.000
weren’t put on this world to make it worse we were put on this world to make it better for tomorrow.
00:32:38.000 –> 00:32:48.000
No matter what religion you are even if you’re an atheist. you have to believe that there’s a greater purpose in life.
00:32:48.000 –> 00:33:03.000
It’s not to destroy the planet it’s not to destroy mankind. And that’s exactly I think, Rachel, where you are coming from with your book with your speaking with your influencing that you are trying to make such a
00:33:03.000 –> 00:33:10.000
difference. I Try every day shooting that’s why I want to talk about 2 things that you said, because I have some stories about that.
00:33:10.000 –> 00:33:15.000
So I was sitting the playground. He has his listening to came into my head, and I stayed.
00:33:15.000 –> 00:33:27.000
I’m So I mined in psych and gender studies right, and I studied a lot about law and I studied a lot about you know, sociology, and they took a class and read, You know, racial history in this country and
00:33:27.000 –> 00:33:38.000
then took a class on family. Well, as you were talking and racism, if anybody gets this message, and I think Jen you guys can’t see us in this conversation.
00:33:38.000 –> 00:33:57.000
But Jen saw my reaction racism is a trauma and it’s a very deep deep deep painful trauma, and I, Jen, i’ll share with you person I just had an experience last week just last week and i’m just sharing
00:33:57.000 –> 00:34:02.000
that book. Now i’m sharing it it’s right just having experience last week.
00:34:02.000 –> 00:34:16.000
And what happens, Jen. And if your listeners get this for me? One racial trauma opens up, brings back every other one that I had.
00:34:16.000 –> 00:34:28.000
One racial trauma brings. back every other racist experience I’ve had the it is that deep over trauma, and that’s where people might not understand.
00:34:28.000 –> 00:34:44.000
And when you were talking about the children, I would say want to say, like 20 years back, I was at a playground, and I witnessed that I saw 3 children of different ethnic backgrounds playing together part of like 2 and they’re having the best time, and then
00:34:44.000 –> 00:34:54.000
sandbox, building their sand castles, and a person came up and pulled, which I said, Oh, my gosh! you said there was a Mickey, but it was like with my finding their Tim like.
00:34:54.000 –> 00:34:57.000
Well, my guys are having the best time can she stay for like 10 min.
00:34:57.000 –> 00:35:02.000
We’re still building the walls and the woman looks at me and she goes.
00:35:02.000 –> 00:35:11.000
No i’m, like Oh, why, they’re having so much she said. it like my child will not play with these children and my girlfriend, and I, who both highly educated.
00:35:11.000 –> 00:35:25.000
We looked at each other and go and there’s a beginning of hate. That child was 2 years old in the sandbox, and all he you know she wanted to do is build sand castles be kid, and when we knew it we’re like
00:35:25.000 –> 00:35:30.000
that’s the beginning of hate so I 100% agree with you that it is taught behavior.
00:35:30.000 –> 00:35:34.000
I have studied this. It is a fact now saying that i’ve also.
00:35:34.000 –> 00:35:42.000
I’ve talk to people who grew up in racist homes right, not by choice.
00:35:42.000 –> 00:35:55.000
That’s just what was passed down to it now what’s beautiful is many of them left in 18 and started their lives all over, and and I’ve I’ve discussed what was the wage I didn’t have a choice
00:35:55.000 –> 00:36:04.000
K. to 18. This is what my family taught me what am I into I’m. in that home, but they would leave go to college and become the own person.
00:36:04.000 –> 00:36:20.000
So it is a choice. It is absolutely a choice and but for people to understand It is, it is so much trauma for human being to experience.
00:36:20.000 –> 00:36:49.000
And that’s really a terrible ways to be dealing with life I mean there’s so much positive, and life there’s so much get so much to give, and it goes back to the idea what are you doing in terms of giving back
00:36:49.000 –> 00:37:10.000
to your community are you giving back right in what ways are you giving back one of the things that I was taught by my parents was that when a community gives you so much, whether it’s through friendship through help through connection through whatever the community
00:37:10.000 –> 00:37:20.000
is giving you. You have to give back. I have been teaching my kids the exact same thing, and I lead by example.
00:37:20.000 –> 00:37:39.000
I serve on so many boards, and commissions that sometimes people wonder how I get anything done just because I am on all of these boards and commissions, and it’s because of the fact that I believe that the stronger our communities
00:37:39.000 –> 00:37:45.000
get , the better. The nation gets and it’s not just United States of America.
00:37:45.000 –> 00:38:07.000
It’s across the globe there’s no reason that any foreign nation shouldn’t have the same benefit one of the things that I have been long pushing, and i’m going to share it here is when we help our people
00:38:07.000 –> 00:38:17.000
get new jobs, more money, get the training They need to be in a position to do that.
00:38:17.000 –> 00:38:32.000
We help lift them up when we lift them up. A lot of the socioeconomic issues that are present in the lower socioeconomic regions start going away.
00:38:32.000 –> 00:38:44.000
When we provide more education, we give a lot of these kids more opportunities to get out of those areas that are going to be in a position to hurt them.
00:38:44.000 –> 00:38:59.000
We give our communities a chance to be increasing in value in education and lifespan health, in happiness and success.
00:38:59.000 –> 00:39:12.000
We start seeing a decrease in crime, we start seeing a decrease and obesity, because people know how to eat better and have access to better food.
00:39:12.000 –> 00:39:25.000
We start seeing better jobs, we start seeing better opportunities for everybody and it’s not a problem.
00:39:25.000 –> 00:39:29.000
We have to maintain a bottom, 1% and a top.
00:39:29.000 –> 00:39:36.000
1%, and everybody else. there’s no reason that we can’t make people better.
00:39:36.000 –> 00:39:39.000
And I’m not saying this is a socialist communist or anything.
00:39:39.000 –> 00:39:55.000
I’m saying it as a realist who believes that it’s totally possible to be helping our people yet a better foothold in life to leave a better tomorrow.
00:39:55.000 –> 00:40:06.000
The more that we see where we’re going the more that we see how we’re going to be making that change That’s going to be creating even more opportunity.
00:40:06.000 –> 00:40:16.000
Everybody on this planet can be in a better position. and I think Rachel, with your story, with your book, with your speaking.
00:40:16.000 –> 00:40:30.000
There’s a lot of that that you’re trying to start doing, and a lot of that that you are reaching people in terms of where they go, and the message that you’re trying to leave them with.
00:40:30.000 –> 00:40:54.000
And I think that that’s really a major testament to the power of getting out there and shining a light, and being that beacon that can really draw a lot of people to you and leave a lot of people , a better
00:40:54.000 –> 00:41:02.000
position after hearing you Thank you, Jen, for your beautiful words and it’s, our jobs as human beings right.
00:41:02.000 –> 00:41:21.000
You, and I think the same way. we need to leave people better than we found them, and that is, it is so beyond necessary now that I can’t even begin to say you and I both know it We know how much people are struggling they’re
00:41:21.000 –> 00:41:29.000
hurting they’re scared they’re anxiety written I mean that’s That’s the reality. what’s going on. What’s going on right now?
00:41:29.000 –> 00:41:39.000
I mean that that’s real life you know nobody’s living in this unicorn rainbow world. it doesn’t it doesn’t exist otherwise it’d be there I would pack up and I would go because i’ve had
00:41:39.000 –> 00:41:44.000
enough pain in trauma to last me the rest of my lifetime and my life.
00:41:44.000 –> 00:41:49.000
Times After that I pack up and go to like jen i’m moving to the University of England.
00:41:49.000 –> 00:42:10.000
But we know it doesn’t, exist, that’s not there but we better lead people better than we found them, and I think that’s a great place for us to, and our conversation shared that we have to leave people in a better way.
00:42:10.000 –> 00:42:18.000
Then we found them, and so as you’re thinking about what you’re going to be doing today.
00:42:18.000 –> 00:42:36.000
Think about what you are going to be offering as community community service, volunteering, giving to others and giving does not have to even mean, necessarily volunteering time.
00:42:36.000 –> 00:42:40.000
It can be a simple complement when you’re in the supermarket.
00:42:40.000 –> 00:42:43.000
Can you tell the cashier and the people that you’re dealing with you.
00:42:43.000 –> 00:43:00.000
Did a great job. Can you tell somebody that you’re walking down the street, and just say, have a nice day when you see the person who’s taking the shopping card at the supermarket parking lot.
00:43:00.000 –> 00:43:12.000
Can you tell them? Thank you, too. You never know how a simple comment can make the world to so many people.
00:43:12.000 –> 00:43:17.000
We don’t know how many people are fighting mental illness and severe depression.
00:43:17.000 –> 00:43:26.000
They mask it extremely well, and when you go and you say something positive, simply like, have a nice day.
00:43:26.000 –> 00:43:30.000
You see me, i’m not invisible I mean all too often.
00:43:30.000 –> 00:43:45.000
We go past the keeping staff, and the janitorial staff in various entities, and they based on the walls because we’re so harried.
00:43:45.000 –> 00:43:49.000
But we don’t have to say that that’s what they are.
00:43:49.000 –> 00:43:53.000
We can recognize them. we can say, Hello! How are you? Thank you.
00:43:53.000 –> 00:44:01.000
Have a nice day when they see that people recognize them that they’re not invisible.
00:44:01.000 –> 00:44:08.000
Start getting a better outlook on life, too, and that can be your community service.
00:44:08.000 –> 00:44:26.000
Have absolutely nothing else. So on that note this has been another episode of MOJO: The Meaning of Life & Business. Thank you, Rachel, for being my guest, and until next time, here’s to your success
